A Holistic Approach To Headaches

You know when you have a headache coming on.  Your neck gets tense and the throbbing starts.  Sometimes the pain starts in the back of your head while other times you feel intense, sharp pains behind your eye.  Sometimes you can function through the pain, while other times it is all you can do to even take a breath.  Regardless of the type or severity of the pain, the first thing you generally reach for is an over-the-counter pain medication that only works to mask the pain and does not get to the root cause of these recurring headaches.  You will find yourself retaking these same pills within an hour or two and still not getting full relief from your pain.  So the questions of why you continue to get these headaches and what can be done to alleviate them have to be addressed.

Chiropractic care may be the solution you are looking for.  Meaning “hand action,” the science of chiropractic care has been around for centuries and is a totally holistic approach to achieving an overall balance and well-being in the body.  Since your spine is the lifeline to your entire body, it only makes sense that if you treat the vertebrate and the muscles surrounding it, you will achieve relief from such debilitating events such as headaches.  Chiropractic care is painless and non-invasive as well as being drug free.  And with today’s advances in computerized adjustments in the chiropractic field being more available, you can achieve relief from headache pain in a fairly short amount of time.

Your initial visit will be a combination of questions about your lifestyle and diet in order to assess the origination of your headaches.  Your chiropractor will then begin to use spinal manipulation in order to coerce your spine back into alignment.  Generally, when your spine is misaligned, you will tend to overcompensate in the rest of your back in order to make up for the injured area.  This can be a leading cause of headaches as well as tension or sinus pain.  The chiropractor may then suggest that you visit a massage therapist in order to keep your back and neck muscles from tightening and thus pulling your newly aligned spine out of place again.  With the combination of both spinal manipulation and massage therapy, you should feel relief from your headaches almost immediately.  The number of visits that you will need depends on how severe the headaches are and the severity of the misalignments you are suffering from.

Of course you cannot run to the chiropractor every time you have a headache or feel one coming on so your chiropractic professional will begin to school you on ways to improve your life and physical well-being.  Things like stretching and strengthening the back muscles, breathing techniques, exercises, as well as herbal supplements will become a part of your every day lifestyle.  If you follow these orders, headaches will become a thing of the past.  You will also become more in -tune with your body and be better equipped to read the warning signs of misalignment and dis-ease that accompanies them.
