The Thousand Dollar Question: Why Do People Get Panic Attacks?

Everyday, millions of people have to suffer the effects of panic attacks. Alot of people are affected by their panic attacks constantly. Then surprisingly, there are many people who never realize the symptoms they experience daily is from panic attacks. Why is it like this you ask? What makes people have panic attacks? Quite often, people who suffer from these symptoms believe that if they knew the cause of the symptoms, then they would be able to fix them.

Panic Attacks, What Are They?

There are many symptoms that acompany panic attacks, but the main symptoms are defined as sudden and abrupt feelings of severe discomfort or fear. A few of these symptoms are heart palpitations, sweating, loss of control, and difficulty breathing. Roughly 10 percent of the population will experience some sort of a panic attack, but only half of them will develop an actual panic disorder. Panic attacks are misunderstood by people who don’t experience them, often leading them to think that the effects are overly exaggerated. However, those of us who do experience constant panic attacks can attest that they are incredibly frightening.

So Why Is It That People Have Panic Attacks?

Even doctors can’t answer explicitly why some people experience these problems. Even more perplexing, they don’t know what causes some people to experience and others not to. Doctors do find a lot of evidence that stress stimulates panic attacks. Although we all experience some stress at times, accumulation of stress largely increases panic in a person. The result of an unexpected situation that caused panic can very possibly be a severe panic attack. You know the quote that “Stress can kill you”. It also does a wonderful job of pulling out nasty panic attacks!

A persons genetic makeup which differs in all of us is what allows some people to be more likely to suffer from panic attacks. Families will have multiple members who also suffer from panic attacks as they are hereditary. Besides genetics, the environment will also play a part in whether or not a person will go through life with panic disorders.

An increased blood pressure rate or high blood pressure in general are some physical contributions to panic attacks. With high blood pressure comes increased excitement, which then leads to panic. Certain vitamin and mineral inadequacies have also been linked to the cause of panic attacks in people. Magnesium is one of many important minerals that is often lacking.

Panic attacks can also be attributed to thyroid problems. Excessive thyroid hormone, caused by an overactive thyroid gland, leads to irregular heart beats and high blood pressure. Sweating and feelings of panic or anxiety will often follow. No matter the reason, panic attacks are cause alot problems in person’s life when left untreated and should be addressed as quickly as possible.
